Our favorite Green Smoothie Recipes

CIMG0027

For those of you that don’t know, Mike and I completed a 3 day Green Smoothie Cleanse a few weeks ago with a group of people from the Vegalicious Blog.  Elena @ Vegalicious has a great testimony, a wonderful wealth of information on nutrition and is gifted with her coaching ability in this area.  I am very thankful for her as I see wonderful things happening to my body and mind.  My prayer is that I can soon be off my thyroid medicine once and for all!!

The immediate results of the cleanse were a 3 lb. weight loss for both of us …..in other words getting the toxins out of our bodies =), energy and a clear mind for me.  Clear mind? Sounds strange I know, but that is the only way I can describe it.  I have never felt better in my everyday tasks…..homeschooling, housework, training and just being a Mom and wife.

Long term…..Well, I had made a promise to Elena that we would still drink 1 to 2 green smoothies a day and we have!  We always have one in the morning and one again before dinner.  The kiddos too! What I love the most is that it has really helped continue to change our diet.  Many of you know that we started off with the 10 Days of Real Food Pledge which helped drastically change our pantry.  You can read more about it here 10 Days of Real Food...Come & Join Us!

So thank you Elena for helping us continue to learn about how to fuel our bodies!!

I just had to throw in this picture above with our sassy new (environmentally friendly) straws Winking smile  Love our glass straws!

I generally just have a large mason jar of smoothie and my coffee (Yes, haven’t broken the habit.) for breakfast.  Below is a typical breakfast for the kiddos.  Small mason jar of smoothie with a bowl of oats, nuts, dried cranberries or some other toppings they love.

Elena is starting another 3 Day Cleanse New Years Day.  What is your New Years Resolution?  Hint, hint!!

Not ready for a 3 day cleanse?  How about trying 1 green smoothie a day for starters?

Just read an article on "The healthy home economist.com" about the need to not consume certain veggies raw, which included spinach. It said it causes thyroid problems. It was her oct. 13 2011 post

Hi Brigit! I was inspired to make a green smoothie for my family today and used one of your recipes, pretty good and everyone but Elise drank it (she's a hard sell for a lot of things). But I have a couple of questions after my first attempt:
1) I used flax seeds that I scooped out from the raw ingredients bin at Sprouts. I noticed that they didn't chop up at all — just stayed whole in the smoothie. I didn't mind but the girls were like, what is that chewy seed? Should I have used them ground? Is it possible to grind them at home or do I have to take them somewhere to be ground?

2) When you did the green smoothie cleanse, did you drink one of these three times a day with nothing else in between?

Thanks for sharing your healthy food endeavors!

Renee I am excited to hear you guys tried a green smoothie! I will clarify on my recipe about the Flax seeds....sorry! I use my coffee grinder and it works like a charm. Most everything I have read about getting the most out of your flax seeds nutritionally speaking says to grind them and use them within a few days.

Maybe you can let Elise choose her favorite fruits and add in one type of green to make her very own recipe. Lucy loves to make up new recipes. Let me know if that works ;)

When we did the cleanse all we had were our smoothies (as much or as often as you want/need), water and green tea. I wasn't very good at measuring as I tended to sip on them throughout the day.

Hope you guys continue to try new recipes until you find your favorites =)

To Anonymous! Thanks for the link to the post on "The Healthy Home Economist" I did take a look at it and have read/heard about this before. We do not have spinach every morning. I rotate our greens each day....chard, spinach, romaine, etc. so we are only consuming spinach once or twice a week. Of course if my body wasn't reacting in a positive way, I would definitely be researching/changing what we are doing. Thanks again as I love to read and learn about with all of you.
